Gardening can be an enjoyable learning activity and a therapeutic hobby whether you have a small balcony or a large backyard.

It is a wonderful way to enjoy the rewarding experience of cultivating plants and watching them flourish. Gardening connects you with nature and lets you enjoy the experience of growing your own plants. It adds natural beauty to your home landscaping

Here are 7 gardening tips for beginners:

Location

Most plants require ample sunlight to thrive. Observe your garden throughout the day to identify areas with full sun, partial shade, or full shade. Your garden needs enough sunlight to succeed. Most vegetable and flower plants require at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Small Garden

When you're new to gardening, it's important to start small and simple. Begin with a small garden bed or a few containers. This will allow you to learn the basics of gardening without feeling overwhelmed. As you gain experience and confidence, you can expand your garden.

Garden Layout

When you are designing your garden layout, plan a simple layout. Review the spacing requirements and height potential of your plants and use proper spacing when planting. Place taller plants in the back of your garden bed, medium sized plants in the middle, and shorter plants in the front. Try to group plants with similar water and sun needs together. Consider companion planting to maximize growth and deter pests.

Prepare Soil

Good soil is essential for growing and maintaining a healthy garden. Before planting, it's essential to understand your soil type. Different plants thrive in different types of soil. Test your soil's pH level and add organic soil, aged manure, and compost to improve its quality. Healthy soil promotes strong root growth and will help your plants grow quicker. Consider raised beds for better drainage and soil control.

Easy to Grow Plants

One of the first steps in successful gardening is choosing plants that thrive in your local climate and are suitable for the soil in your garden. Research which plants are native and well suited for the climate in your region. Plant easy to grow vegetables such as lettuce, onions, snow peas, and tomatoes. Oregano, mint and rosemary are perennial herbs that are easy to grow. If you are planning to grow flowers; petunias, marigolds, pansies, and zinnias are a good choice for beginner gardeners. These plants are low maintenance and are known to be resilient.

Mulching

Mulching helps retain soil moisture, reduces evaporation, and can also suppress weeds. Apply a layer of mulch around your plants to keep the soil healthy and reduce the need for frequent watering. Add 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch around your plants to help your soil retain moisture, maintain proper temperature, and reduce weeds in your garden.

Water Properly

Proper watering is essential for plant health, but it's important to get the balance right. Different plants have varying water needs, so it's crucial to understand the requirements of each type of plant you are growing. Too much water can lead to root rot and other issues, while too little water can cause plants to wilt and die. Review the watering needs of your plants. It is usually better to water your garden early in the morning when the ground is cooler. Water your plants deeply and less frequently. Watering deeply will encourage strong root growth and result in healthier plants in your garden.

Don't get discouraged if some of your plants don't succeed at first. It’s all part of the learning experience that takes time and practice. Be patient and happy gardening!
