Home Interior Lighting Tips

Lighting provides dramatic impact. It adds mood, atmosphere and elegance to a home and plays an essential role in the overall appearance of a space. When you're considering a lighting design for your home, think in terms of function and mood.

To select the right lighting scheme to suit a room’s needs; function is the first thing you should consider. Different types of lighting serve different functions (e.g., reading, watching television, highlighting decorative objects).

There are three types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. All three must be harmonized and balanced together in a room.

Ambient lighting is the main source of light that brightness up the entire room. It provides overall illumination and should be consistent and even throughout the entire space. Chandeliers, recessed lighting, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures and Torchères are usually used to provide ambient lighting.

Task lighting provides light to specific areas where people will be performing particular activities such as reading, writing, sewing, cooking, or doing homework. Table lamps, standing lamps and track lighting are fixtures that are used to provide task lighting.

Accent lighting adds drama to a room and is usually used to create a visual point of interest. It highlights the strongest features of a design and draws attention to details. Accent lighting is often used to spotlight architectural features, sculptures, paintings, plants or collectables.

Lighting can be used in various ways to create many different moods when designing a room. Bright and natural lights create energetic and happy moods. Warm lights create a calm and comfortable mood. Cool lights create a relaxed and peaceful mood.

Creative use of lighting will improve the appearance of a space and add elegance and brightness to a home.
